Add-Ons

  1. Requires installation of four NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics cards, each of which provides support for up to two 20-inch Apple Cinema Displays or 23-inch Apple Cinema HD Displays.
  2. Wireless Internet access requires base station or other wireless access point and Internet access (fees may apply). Achieving optimal 802.11n data rates requires that all users have an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Card and connect to an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station. Speed and range will be less if an 802.11a/b/g product joins the network. Actual performance will vary based on range, connection rate, site conditions, size of network, and other factors. Range will vary with site conditions. Based on IEEE 802.11n draft specification.
  3. 1TB = approximately 1 trillion bytes; actual formatted capacity less.
  4. PCI Express slots are not compatible with PCI or PCI-X expansion cards.
  5. Actual weight varies by configuration and manufacturing process.

Mac Pro: front, side and back.

Design driven.

With its multicore Intel Xeon processor lineup and its tour de force design, Mac Pro revolutionizes desktop usability, functionality, and accessibility. It provides four hard drive bays and a cable-free installation process — with no cables or connectors to trouble you. A tool-less PCI bracket simplifies the installation and removal of expansion cards. The double-wide graphics slot means you don’t have to sacrifice a valuable expansion slot. Eight FB-DIMM slots on two riser cards offer quick, easy memory installation. And you’ll find plenty of ports up front for added convenience — including a FireWire 400 port, a FireWire 800 port, and two USB 2.0 ports.

Massive internal storage

Mac Pro offers four drive bays, providing up to 3TB of internal storage. Speedy 3Gb/s Serial ATA drives install in sleek aluminum carriers that slide simply into place. And the side door latch locks them securely into the enclosure.

Massive Internal Storage

A double dose of optical drives

Every Mac Pro comes with a single 16x SuperDrive, but a second bay lets you outfit your Mac Pro with a pair of SuperDrives. Talk about productivity gains. With two 16x SuperDrives, you can simultaneously read from one drive and write to the other. Read from both drives. Or even write to both.

A Double Dose of Optical Drives

Workstation graphics, no sacrifices

Offering ample room for future growth, the Mac Pro enclosure features a double-wide PCI Express graphics slot. Install any of the available graphics cards, and you can still use any and all of the three remaining PCI Express expansion slots.

Making connections

Mac Pro provides 16 ports for connecting network and peripheral devices. That includes five ports right up front: Below the Power button, you’ll find the headphone minijack,
USB 2.0, FireWire 400, and FireWire 800 ports.

And 11 more in back, including USB 2.0, FireWire 400,
FireWire 800, optical audio in and out, analog audio in and out, and dual Gigabit Ethernet ports.

Intel Xeon

64-bit Intel Xeon. Up to 3.0GHz.

Inside each Mac Pro reside either two Quad-Core or two Dual-Core Intel Xeon processors. Running at up to 3.0GHz, they bring industry-leading 64-bit performance to every Mac Pro.

Dual-Core Intel Xeon Processor

8-core or quad-core. It's all Xeon.

Based on Intel’s Core microarchitecture and designed for systems with multiple processors, the two 64-bit Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Clovertown” processors in the new 8-core Mac Pro set a blistering 3GHz pace.

And the 64-bit Dual-Core Intel Xeon “Woodcrest” processors that power the quad-core Mac Pro run at clock speeds of 2.0GHz, 2.66GHz, or 3.0GHz. That translates to up to 2x the performance of the Power Mac G5 Quad.1

More power using less power

Because Intel designed its Xeon processors to be more efficient, they consume less power than similar workstation-level processors, so your system fans don’t have to work as hard to keep them cool. Working hand in glove with Mac OS X Tiger, Xeon also continues the tradition of enabling 64-bit computation. Ideal for demanding creative and scientific applications, the 64-bit Intel Xeon processors can manage the precision needed for floating-point mathematics that express integers up to 18 billion billion. They also allow Mac Pro to surpass the 4GB memory limit of 32-bit processors.

Speedy system architecture

Augmenting the speed of its processors, the Mac Pro system architecture features 1.33GHz dual independent frontside buses that maximize performance and deliver total processor bandwidth of up to 21.3GB/s. Every Intel Xeon processor also offers an enhanced SSE3 vector engine. Capable of completing 128-bit vector computations in a single cycle, the SSE3 vector engine accelerates data manipulation by simultaneously applying a single instruction to multiple data — ideal for transforming large sets of data, such as applying a filter to an image or rendering a video effect.

Count on the cache

The L2 cache — 8MB per processor on the 8-core Mac Pro (16MB total) and 4MB per processor on the quad-core Mac Pro (8MB total) — keeps data and instructions closer to the processor cores, enhancing performance. And every Mac Pro features Intel’s Advanced Smart Cache technology, which allows each processor core access up to 4MB of L2 cache.

Up to 16GB of fully buffered memory

All Mac Pro workstations support a fully buffered memory standard that allows for more memory capacity, higher-speed memory, and better memory reliability. Riser card with four DIMMsYou can install up to 16GB of 667MHz DDR2 Error Correction Code (ECC) fully buffered memory in every Mac Pro system. And with its 256-bit-wide memory architecture, Mac Pro offers twice the width of the memory architecture in the Power Mac G5.
